As I was visiting my hometown Puri during my college vacations, I was really excited to enjoy this two weeks long tour with my family especially with my cousin sisters and celebrate Kumar Purnima that was going to fall in between my stay at home. The entire festival is celebrated in the entire state of Odisha and talking about Puri, the celebrations are simply awesome. The entire city seems to be drenched in the most beauteous hues throughout the festival.
Celebrated by all married and unmarried girls, it is believed that girls worship Lord Kartikeya and ask to be blessed with grooms as handsome the Lord. Being a resident of Puri, I have seen and witnessed each and every highlight of the festival and what it means for girls especially. Just like Raja Festival it is celebrated with great zeal. I remember in my childhood days I would dress with my favorite dress and stand amidst the neighbors and relatives during their prayers top the moon that Now I understood were to have an ideal husbands.
During the festival girls take bath before sunrise and wear new clothes. Fasting is also seen on this day. In the evening when the moon rises, they pray and offer Prasad. The day also comprises singing folk songs and dancing in happiness. One can also find numerous cultural programmes that are arranged on the eve of the Kumar Poornima. Well! I have packed up all my essentials and is eagerly waiting for the day when I’ll set out for my home town.
