Rath Yatra is a prominent festival of Odisha that is observed every year during the month of July. In ancient days Viswavasu named tribal leader worshipped Lord Jagannath as Lord Neela Madhav in deep forest, which is not shown to everybody. So the king Indradyumna sent a priest Vidyapati to find deity and the destination where he was present. When Viddyapaticould not succeed to find the way to reach near Lord. He finally married to Viswavasu’s daughter Lalita and requested one day to see the place of Lord Neela Madhav. On his request, Vishwavasu blindfolded him and took him to that place.
WhenVidyapatidid not open his eyes to see the way, he dropped mustard seeds to mark the way. This way they find the way to reach near God but when King Indradyumna come to that place he had returned with great sorrow because Lord had been disappeared.
But King Indradyumna saw dreams of Lord and based on a celestial voice’s direction built the temple and the wooden images of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.
Rath Yatra is the celebration of Lords’ visit to their aunt’s house, which is believed to be Gundicha temple. It is believed that Gundicha, King’s queen was impressed by Lord Jagannth and requested for the temple to built and initiate a Rath Yatra celebration where as others believe that Lord Jagannath promised queen to visit her house and from that day Rath Yatra is celebrating every year.
