Janmashtami : Festival to celebrates the birth of Lord Shree Krishna

Krishna Janmashtami is also known as “Krishnashtami”, “Saatam Aatham”, “Gokulashtami”, “Ashtami Rohini”, “Srikrishna Jayanti”, “Sree Jayanthi” or popularly as “Janmashtami”, it celebrates the birth of Lord Shree Krishna. Lord Krishna was born at midnight in the second fortnight of Krishna Paksha (lunar Fortnight) in Rohini Nakshatram.

It is observed on the eighth day of the dark half of the month of Bhadrava. The festival always falls within mid-August to mid-September in the Gregorian calendar. On a dark, stormy night went the Lord from his prison birthplace atop his father’s head in a small basket as the angry river gave way and the serpent Seshnag protected him from the driving rain – to his foster care – the reciter of the Geeta – the avatar who both created and played out Mahabharata, slayer of Kansa arrived, son of Devaki – Yoshoda Nandan – on the darkest of night – the brightest of lights. I am not sure of the literary translation from sanskrit – tried to stick to the ‘feelings’ part.

    ¬

Rasa Lila or dramatic enactments of the life of Krishna are a special feature in regions of Mathura and Vrindavan, and regions following Vaishnavism in Manipur. While the Rasa Lila recreates the flirtatious aspects of Krishna’s youthful days, Govinda Pathaks or Dahi Handi celebrate the God’s playful and mischievous side, where teams of young men form human pyramids to reach a high-hanging pot of butter and break it.

In the Banke Bihari temple of Vrindavan at midnight Maha Abhishek is conducted in the inner sanctum followed by special darshan from 2am to 6 am. At midnight, the idol of the infant Krishna is bathed, clothed in silk and finery, placed in a cradle and worshiped.

Janmaashtami, popularly known in Mumbai and Pune as ‚ÄúDahi Handi‚ÄĚ is celebrated with enthusiasm. The clay pot filled with buttermilk is positioned at a height prior to the event; the topmost person on the human pyramid breaks it spilling buttermilk over the group, symbolizing their achievement through unity. ‚ÄúGovinda‚ÄĚ troops compete with each other to break handis to commemorate the breaking of pots by the young Lord and his group of friends. Janmashtami is also celebrated fervently in Manipur.

In Dwarka (Gujarat) Jagad Mandir – which traces history back to 400BC on this special day Shreejee or the Thakur gives darshan to his devotees. Rituals are performed by Aboti Brahmins; they are said to be performing this auspicious task since centuries.

Toshali Resorts invites you to witness and celebrate this year Janmashtami on Thursday, 2nd September’2010 at Puri, Odisha where Lord Shree Jagannath abodes. Lord Jagannatha is no other than Lord Krishna who is also known as Madana Mohana, Ramakrishna, Gopala, Gopinath….. Raksha Bandhan Festival – Bond of protection, love and togetherness.

In which other country do you have a festival where brothers vow to protect sisters?

Rani Karnavati of Chittor and Mughal Emperor Humayun is the most significant evidence in history. Around the 15th century, there were frequent wars. Rakhi was a spiritual bond and protection of sisters was foremost. When Rani Karnavati the widowed queen of Chittor was defenceless against the invasion of the Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah, she sent a Rakhi to Emperor Humayun. Touched by this gesture he abandoned an ongoing military campaign to ride to her rescue.

Other legends include how Draupadi once tore a strip of silk off her sari and tied it around Krishna’s index finger to stop the flow of blood. The Lord was so touched by her action that he promised to repay the debt. He aided Draupadi during “Vastra-Haran”. The creator of all ‘maya’¬† indefinitely extended her saree, in another instance he gifted Draupadi an utensil that would satisfy the hunger of any number of guests and so on.

Another legend states the bond between the great devotee of Lord Vishnu and the great demon emperor Bali or Mahabali (grandson of Prahlada) and Goddess Laxmi – and how the Lord while subduing Bali in the Vamana avatar granted him the boon to visit his land (Kerala) once a year and also promised him the role of the eigth Indra. Goddess Laxmi tied a thread on the wrist of the great devotee.

Again the God of death Yama used to have a thread tied on his wrist by Yamuna – his sister. The Yama promised immortality to anyone getting a rakhi tied and promising his sister protection.

There is another legend associated with King Porus and Alexander’s ‘Indian’ wife Roxana or Roshanak – but I guess that has got more patriotism than truth to it :)

Rakhi is celebrated as Rakhi Purnima in North and South India. It is also celebrated as Grahma Purnima in Orissa. On this date all the domesticated Cows and Bullocks are decorated and worshipped. In parts of western India the day is celebrated as Nariyal Purnima. An offering of a coconut (nariyal) is made to Lord Varuna, the God of the Sea and it marks the beginning of the fishing season. The people of the Kumaon, Uttarakhand, celebrate it as a day on which people change their sacred thread. In Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Jharkand and Bihar this day is celebrated as Kajari Purnima. In parts of Gujarat, this day is celebrated as Pavitropana. On this day people perform the grand pooja or ritual or the worship of Lord Shiva.

In Rabindranath Tagore’s vision of celebrating Raksha Bandhan was a celebration of mankind and of humanity. In 1905 when the British decided to divide Bengal Tagore arranged Raksha Bandhan to be celebrated to strengthen the bond of love and togetherness between the Hindus and the Muslims and unite them in the fight against the British.

We all should learn from The great Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s vision‚Ķ¬†¬†the bond of love and togetherness should prevail in the society.¬†Raskha Bandhan festival are worth inculcating by the whole human race, the sentiments of harmony and peaceful coexistence. We all need a ‚ÄúPEACE‚Ä̂Ķ !!

Celebrate Raksha Bandhan on 24th August 2010, gift a holiday voucher this Rakhi festival, your sister is looking forward to it, read her mind ! Contact your travel consultant for travel voucher metu@toshali.in Post your comment, how are you going to spend your Raksha Bandhan..

Jhulan Yatra – The Golden Swing Festival of Lord Krishna

“Jhula Jhule Radha Damodara Vrundavan Main,

Kaisi Cchayi Hariyali Ali Kunjan Main”

Jhulana Yatra ia a favourite pastime of Srimati Radharani and Lord Sree Krishna’s. It celebrates Srimati Radharani’s yearly sojourn to Varshana to her parents’ house. Another myth is that with the onset of monsoon, when the nature assumes green form, Sri Radharani prepares a swing deep in the jungle and invites Lord Krishna for ‘Raasleela’. In Vrindavan among the local villagers and inhabitants this festival lasts for 13 days. It starts on Shravana Dasami, the bright fortnight and lasts until the full moon night of the month.

Some of the main temples where this festival is celebrated at are the Banke Bihari Temple and the Radha-Raman Temple in Vrindavana, the Dwarkadish temple in Mathura, and the Larily Lal Temple in Varsana, and selected Mathas such as Emarmath, Radhaballavi Math, Uttarparsa math and many mothas and the temple of Lord Jagannath in Puri, Odisha. In some temples it is observed only for seven days. In some temples on all five days from Ekadashi to Poornima.

    ¬

Jhulan Yatra Festival Celebration in Mathura

Jhulana is celebrated in other parts of India in Shravana. For example in Shree Kshetra Lord Jagannath’s Utsav Vighraha (Madan-Mohan ji), celebrates Jhulana from Shravana Shukla Dashami (10th phase of the Moon of the light fortnight) until Pratipada (1st tithi of the dark fortnight), a period of seven days. Sri Madanmohan ji, goddess Laxmi and Vishwadhatri are placed on a decorative wooden swing on Muktimandap of Puri (Jhulana Mandap). There worshippers swing the Lord, symbolically playing with and entertaining the Lord of the Universe.

On the day of the full moon (Gamha Purnima or Jhulana Purnima), Lord Balabhadra’s appearance day is celebrated. Lord Jagannath is but another form of Lord Krishna, but Jhulana Yatra became popular in Puri, Odisha after Sri Chaitanya visited and the festival in the temple was first initiated by the Gajapati king Dibyasingha Dev-II (1793-1798). These days Jhulana Yatra is scrupulously observed in the temple of Lord Jagannath and other Mathas in Puri, for a week.

Jhulan Yatra Festival Celebration in Vrindavan

In the ISKCON headquarters in Mayapur Jhulan is a major festival. It is one of the Astaka Lila pastimes of the Lords.  It is celebrated for 5 days.

The Lord Shree Krishna resides as Jhule Lal in Gujarat and festival of Janmasthami is celebrated in dedicated temples in a big way, during month of Shravan, for example in Dwarka.

Vaishnavism is popular in Manipur too. Mandil Nartan is a festival dance performed during the Jhulana Yatra there. The dancers use small cymbals (Mandila) to provide the musical accompaniment to their dance depicting Sri RadhaKrishna on the swing surrounded by Gopis.

Childhood memories of cutting and arranging moss beds, decorating a swing and placing an idol of Sri Radha Kishna, lighting it all up is still fresh. Sometimes the idol of Sree Radha Krishna were substituted with a small boy and a girl – gorgeously dressed up, complete with a flute. I fondly remember Jhulana Yatra used to be a favourite excuse for staying out till late evening :)

This year Jhulan Yatra is celebrated on 19 August 2010 for next 13 Days. Toshali Resorts has exclusive arrangement to manage your tour and travel to witness and make you participate in Jhulana Yatra Festival. Born Free, Forever Free – India Celebrating 64th Independence Day

India National FlagOn the midnight hour of August 15, 1947 India got its freedom. There was delirious excitement as the new sun dawned on a new country. A freedom won at much cost, an occasion to be cherished and remembered for eons to come. A nascent, bruised nation faced a lot of challenges along the way; we have a long way to go but are happy to be here.

During school it used to be a flag hosting ceremony, followed by a full day’s telecast from Doordarshan – patriotic films, holiday, delicious smells wafting in from the kitchen, playing in the dust with equally scruffy friends and then a minor scolding later, after a delicious lunch – a little nap, then usually an outing on a stately rickshaw. Off late the day means pleasant traffic, a thinly populated office, decorated with rangolis and the customery samosa, jelebis, shared with the lucky/unlucky ones working on the day.

The Prime minister would hoist the tricolour and address the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort, like always. This year inflation, rising prices, red terror, commonwealth Games mess will likely be issues he addresses. But as a nation we are entering a stage where the next 20-25 years would shape the destiny of the country for a long time to come.

    ¬

“Jana Gana Mana” – ¬†India Natioanal Anthem

For me August 15 is usually a working day but between renewing your pledge for a better tomorrow you can drop by at a nearby resort – add the Friday, the Saturday and maybe the Monday – a short drive to Shilon Bagh, Shimla or a near empty bus to Puri – depending on where you are. The country’s birthday needs to be celebrated well and never let the sombreness of the occassion pull you down, for all its sombreness the very word independence is a synonym of joie de vivre for me. Born free, forever free. Laud the achievements of the country but remember if everyone of us does their bit the country would be better, for it is not soil that make a land – its people.

¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† “Vande Mataram” – India National Song

We all know a lot about the pros and cons of our beloved motherland but for me August 15 has always remained and will always remain a personal experience, one which you can feel but can’t express. Prior to this 64th Independence Day I will renew the pledge to do my bit, do join me Рas drops makes an ocean so will each of us take our motherland just that little bit forward in her journey.

Are you planning for a soaking, peaceful and tranquil weekend getaway to spend Independence Day in a lovely place amidst the beauty of nature. Then what are you waiting for, check out for an independent villa along Sea Beach or in the panoramic view of Himalayas….. “I percieve in an instant. Friend your delays on
Mountain after Mountain, Scented with flowers‚ÄĚ
                                                    Quote РKalidas (Meghdoot)

Even the great poet hailing from the plains knew that the monsoon clouds tarry on hill tops and embrace mountains on its journey North. TRVRBravo

Poetry apart – Ever walked through a cloud? Walked right through it and got drenched to emerge to an astounding visual symphony of greens and whites and a riot of colours. Ever felt the soothing finger of monsoon rains that seems to make the hills more beautiful. Just be there and out of your window you’ll see the clouds moving from valley to valley, touching its midas finger along the way. When the skies are clear you can see kinnaur kailash in the distance and the Shivaliks too.¬†¬

The Britishers introduced non-local trees and flowering and the Weeping Willows, Silver Oak and chestnut have fared remarkably well locally. The nearby Chharabra village, part of Shimla Reserve Forest sanctuary and catchment area provides breathtaking views of the Himalayas and a look at the aforementioned flora and fauna and sometimes a jackal, kakkar (barking deer), the occasional leopard, and bird species like the Himalayan eagle, pheasants, chikor and partridges.

Beauty of Monsoon at Puri Sea Beach “Toshali Sands”

Scorched by the summer heat, I lie withered almost defeated
Fervently, silently awaiting, Deliverance by your Healing cooling caresses
    That could ignite me….

    Quote by Taara Nandita

If it had words such would have been the sea shore’s lament. By June the weather is typically that of a tropical summer, very hot and humid. The parched lands wait for the monsoon rains. By mid July the monsoons arrive¬† low, dark clouds move over from the sea, the wind suddenly stops and there is complete silence ‚Äď then with a loud thunder clap it literally pours. It seems that the heavy deluge will wash away all the dust and heat of the summer with it. It cools the environs appreciably. Small rivulets make their way through the beach to the sea. Everywhere you look there is greenery, parched vegetation is replenished, new plants spring up, all around it looks greener than ever before.

    Toshali Sands Cottage

Traditionally monsoon was the off season for tourists. Monsoon tours started with Goa, it gives you a unique, personal perspective of a place otherwise teeming with tourists. The monsoon mood of a beach resort is guided by the mood of the sea. The Arabian Sea is a much calmer compatriot of the Bay of Bengal. This is a turbulent sea. The beauty of it Рespecially during the monsoons can be both breathtaking and awesome at Balighai Beach, Puri.

    Toshali Sands Collage

Toshali Sands looks bedecked in emerald. It’s a riot of greens. Every leaf, every blade of grass glimmers. It is instantly refreshing. The otherwise placid Nuanai river is full to the brim. The nearby sanctuary is a riot of colours. In the eastern parts of India it can literally rain for days. The gray, looming sky matches with the slate gray of the sea, the white of the breaking surf adds to the allure. Looking at a foaming raging sea can be somewhat intimidating but it is beautiful, uniquely beautiful. You can rest assured that one single look and you’ll be hooked.

Balighai Beach Puri Balighai Beach, Puri

Life in Toshali Sands goes on as usual, a little relaxed. There are a lot of special offers for the Monsoons. This is the traditional rice planting season. While on a trip to a nearby village of artisans, if you wish you can see traditional farming, still practiced in most parts of India. So if you have heard someone asking tourists to give beaches a miss during the rains don’t listen, just go ahead, carry a big umbrella and head for an one of a kind experience at ethnic village resort “Toshali Sands.

Golden Attire – Suna Besha of Lord Sree Jagannath, Puri dham

The Suna bhesa or Bada Tadau bhesa or Raja bhesa happens the day after the return of the Lords from Gundicha. On the day of Bada Ekadasi, the 11th day of the bright fortnight in Asadha. The deities, on their chariots itself don the golden attire or the suna besa, with hands, arms and crown made of solid gold. They are decorated with gold diadems, hands and feet made of gold. Lord Jagannath holds a gold Chakra (Disc) in his right hand and Silver Sankha (Conch) in his left hand. Lord Balabhadra holds a gold Hala (plough) in his left hand and a golden Gada (mace) in his right hand. The dress reportedly weighs one ton. They are also offered sweet drinks, adhara pana, on huge cylindrical earthen pots reaching up to their lips. They are taken down from the chariots in a ritual descent to enter the temple.

Golden attire – Suna Besha of Lord Sree Jagannath, Puri Dham Orissa

Other than the Rath Yatra, the Lord Sree Jagannath is dressed in this regal attire on festivals like Dasahara, Kartika Purnima and Pousa Purnima (Pushyabhiseka Besha).

After this the very human and amusing feud takes place between the Lord and Goddess Laxmi in the main gate of SreeMandir, Puri dham. Ultimately the humility of the Lord prevails and he is allowed entrance to his abode. There is great ullulation and fanfare and in his stately ‚ÄėPahundi‚Äô style the Lord returns to his seat ‚Äď marking an end to the grand spectacle of Rath Yatra. It is said that a ardshan of the Lords Sree Jagannath in ‚ÄúSuna Bhesa‚ÄĚ frees one from the cycle of rebirth.

This year you can see the Lords in their golden attire, popularly known as Suna Bhesa on July 22 and after the symbolic Laxmi-Narayan feud the Lords will enter SreeMandir on July 23‚Äô 2010 bringing to an end the grand festival of Rath Yatra ‚Äď The Car Festival.

To take part in the conclusive part of ‚ÄėRath Yatra‚ÄĚ ‚Äď The ‚ÄúSuna Bhesa‚ÄĚ Festival on 22nd July 19, 2010, Toshali Sands, Puri has exclusive arrangement to take you on visit to the ‚ÄúSree Mandir‚ÄĚ Bada Danda¬† ‚Äď The Lord Jagannath Temple, Puri Orissa ‚Äėnow called as Odisha‚ÄĚ.
