Debasnana Purnima: First Ceremony of Hindus

Debasnana Purnima is the first important festival before starting the Rath Yatra or Car Festival is Snana Yatra. Snana Yatra means Bathing Festival. 

As per Hindu beliefs this year The Snana Yatra is going to be held on 9th June, the Purnima or full moon day of the Jyestha month. As per Hindus it is the first occasion of the year in the calendar. On this day all the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra, Sudarshan and Madanmohan are bringing out of the main temple and with grand procession come to Snana Bedi, the place where all takes bath. This is the bath that shown to the public, as it is a belief among devotees that if they will see deity on this day, all sins will be cleansed. So during this time, the temple is filled with uncounted devotees.

The ceremony is observed in a traditional way with full grandeur and is also one of the most anticipated rituals of the Lord Jagannath Temple. This bathing goes on for a few hours in the midst of kirtanas glorifying their ships and the chanting of the maha-mantra. Lord Jagannatha’s prasada is also offered to all visitors. Some even observe this festival as the birthday of Lord Jagannath. Devotees from different parts of the country come and witness this unique event.
